how can i increase the number of processes running?

i can't seem to get more than 240 processes running (programs seg fault and nasty stuff like that) i have been looking into it and i think it must have something to do with a limit on /proc? (i'm running 2.1.33 and libc 5.4.17) Please email me at elfuddo@hotmail.com if you are able to shed some light on this problem, thanks
